If you are prescribed to take azithromycin tablets to treat your bacterial infection, it is good to know some important information about these azithromycin tablets so that you are aware and understand what it does and what benefits (and side effects) it can provide.
When you are under a treatment course of azithromycin tablets, you have to complete the whole regimen unless you are told by your doctor to stop taking them. In case you experience any side effects when taking azithromycin tablets, the most common ones are headache, diarrhea, and feeling unwell.
Before taking azithromycin tablets
There are some medications that are not suitable for patients who have certain medical conditions, and sometimes there are medicines that should only be used while being strictly monitored and observed by the doctor. Because of these reasons, it is very important that your doctor be informed of the following information before you take azithromycin tablets:
- If you may have an unusual heart rhythm
- If you have myasthenia gravis
- If you have any allergies to a medicine
- If you are taking any other medicines
- If you are pregnant or breast feeding
- If you have any problems with your kidneys or liver
How to take azithromycin tablets
Prior to taking azithromycin tablets, it is wise to read the manufacturer’s leaflet that you can usually find inside the box or pack. The leaflet shall give you detailed information about azithromycin tablets and from there, you will find out the potential side effects you may experience when taking them.
Take the exact number of azithromycin tablets just like what your doctor told you to do so. Azithromycin tablets are generally taken only once per day. Depending on the bacterial infection you have, you might only need to take one dose or you may be given a treatment regimen that will last from 3 up to 5 days.
If you are taking azithromycin tablets or liquid solution, you can take them either before or after meals. If you are taking azithromycin capsules, it is best to take them 1 hour before eating anything, or waiting up to 2 hours after eating. In case you forgot to take a dose of azithromycin tablets, take it as soon as you remember again; however, do not make up for the missed dose by taking 2 at the same time.
Many of us tend to stop taking medications when we are feeling better already. Even if you feel that your infection has disappeared, it is best that you keep taking azithromycin tablets until the prescribed treatment course is complete, or your doctor tells you to stop. Stopping the intake of azithromycin tablets right before the course is completed might initiate the infection to come back and become even more resistant to treat.
