Volunteer Assignment ---------------------------- Assistance to Disaster and Health Information Centers in Central America Partner ------- National Library of Medicine (NLM): http://sis.nlm.nih.gov/outreach/outreachcandhi.html Assignment ---------- The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is collaborating with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR) to support the rebuilding and strengthening of the local and national health information infrastructures in Central America through the creation of the Central American Network on Disaster and Health Information (CANDHI). One to two Encore! volunteers are needed to help enhance the management of the information technology resources of the Disaster and Health Information Center at each CANDHI institution as well as to document the Information Technology infrastructure and information management challenges and identify potential solutions. This is an exciting assignment with specific tasks and deliverables that requires technical expertise and an ability to communicate effectively at a local, grassroots level. Location and duration --------------------- Volunteers will spend up to two weeks in either Honduras or El Salvador. Exact timing of the assignment will depend on the availability of the volunteer and further discussions with NLM and CANDHI center staff. Qualifications -------------- Volunteers should possess the following qualifications: - Up to date knowledge of and experience with current Information Technology (IT) tools and management practices for computer systems and networks. - Administration of computer systems and local area networks running a Linux operating system and Windows operating systems. - Experience creating and implementing IT management and security best practices. - Configuration and management of simple web sites using Apache and IIS, with Perl and PHP, and open source database management systems. - High level of proficiency in written and spoken Spanish. - Ability to communicate and teach/mentor staff with limited formal education. - Humility, sense of humor, and a "can do" attitude! Funding ------- This is a funded assignment (airfare, housing, meals). Volunteers are responsible for the costs associated with passport/visa, health and travel insurance, medical evacuation insurance, immunizations, and other personal costs.
